Gene's Coffee Shop
26 E. 60th Street
(Park & Madison)
212-355-3790
As the characters of "Seinfeld" showed week in and week out, every New Yorker needs a decent coffee shop to go to and hang out.
For those that watched the show, you might understand why a place like "Gene's" would make Elaine feel like she's in a bizarro world.
For those of us that live in the lower rungs of the Upper East Side and even midtown east'rs, Gene's Coffee Shop does the job just fine.
With reasonable breakfast specials, including two eggs -- served with home fries or toast, for $3.45; two pancakes with butter and syrup for $3.95; or muffins for just $1.05 each!
Although prices do go up from there, we suggest the Belgian waffles with fresh fruit and whipped cream -- the perfect start to the day for just $7.25. The lunch and dinner entrees are decent as well, and typically go for $9 to $13, including the roast sirloin of beef ($11.50) -- always served with choice of soup or salad, as well as potato and a vegetable.
Definitely get the chicken gyro on pita bread -- you'll see why when you do. That's just $5.55.
